1st Annual Farm to Fork at Modesto Farmers’ Market

FarmToFork.jpgSenator Cathleen Galgiani’s 1st Annual Farm-to-Fork will be held in downtown Modesto, at the First Methodist Church, adjacent to the Certified Farmers Market, on Saturday, October 18, 11:00 am – 2:00 pm.

This event is a community celebration of agriculture, with the benefit of informing families of healthy food choices, accessibility to fresh produce and food preparation and safety. Senator Galgiani and her colleagues are working with the Farmers Market to increase the foot traffic considerably, so this is a tremendous opportunity for local growers, producers, educators and health professionals to be represented and educate the community about their mission, whether that be promoting fresh, local produce, ag education, nutritious diet, good health and exercise, combating obesity and diabetes, food safety, home gardens, and/or water conservation.

Our current partners are the Certified Farmers Market, Foster Farms, Doctors Medical Center, Stanislaus Farm Bureau, Stanislaus Women of Agriculture, the California Strawberry Association, the California Almond Board, Gregori High School FFA, Enoch High School FFA, Wood Colony 4-H, West Modesto Collaborative and UC Cooperative Extension (WIC).

A quick example of some of the activities and exhibits include a cooking demonstration by Mark Cullors and David Bradford; chicken handling safety and preparation by Foster Farms; an interactive, healthy, parfait making treat for visitors provided by the California Strawberry Association; an interactive, life size dairy cow, that children can “milk” and better understand where milk comes from courtesy of 4-H, and a water use study and drip irrigation display created by Davis HS FFA.

This is a wonderful community event that connects the convenience of farmers markets to the overall benefits that local farming, and healthy living benefit the community overall. Please join us at this event.
