Art View By Jim Christiansen
April is the month I get to invite all of you Art View readers to come over to my house. I’m one of 64 artists doing this April 12 and 13, as part of the Stanislaus Artist Open Studio Tour. You can check out the laundry room office, the Dining Room gallery, front porch painting spot, and the actual studio, where the collection of paintings, drawings, clutter, barely alter the garage conversion for visitors. I have a collection of art I got from other artists. In addition to my Chris Murphy ink sketches, I have originals from Jordi Camps, Jen Coffey, Mark Holden, and may have a Dan Petersen original courtesy Trewin Framery. Come over and sign the guest book, see if I can sell you some art for the house or office or talk to the student artist in your family, as students 18 and under get in Free.
The $10 map starts the tour in Turlock, then up to Tyler Abshier in Ceres, to Modesto, North Modesto and Riverbank, on to Oakdale, Escalon and Manteca. If you get the map ahead of time, you can plan your trip to start anywhere on the tour. Maps are on sale at Mistlin Gallery, Chartreuse Muse, Carnegie Arts Center, Oakdale Museum. Nasco-West out on Stoddard will have art demo as a sponsor stop on Saturday. Mistlin Gallery starting at 8 am on April 12. www.stanislausaos.wordpress.com<http://www.stanislausaos.wordpress.com>
I did some drawings last month for Modesto View at Lucky Fest, and added some new additions to the Barkin Dog hallway gallery, with assist from Chris Murphy. New images of Blue Monday, Dave Dow Thursday Jam, The Neighbor Kids 2nd Wednesday and Big Earl and the Cryin’ Shame added. Enjoy David Schroeder photographs in Barkin Dog’s feature gallery. Other events in April include Merced Art Hop April 20, Downtown Modesto Third Thursday Art Walk April 18. I’ll be with Vincent Sandoval III and Liquor Lights at The Wedding Loft. Look for the red carpet and off the map spots. April 13th to 18th, Watercolor Portrait Artist Ted Nuttall will be holding workshop sessions at Kowana Valley Folk School and Lodge, near Coulterville. www.kowanavalley.com<http://www.kowanavalley.com> for information.
New Art and studio spot for artists, crafters, cooking and more is Figamarole, in Ceres at 3866 Roeding Road
Central Valley Arts Showcase, will open at both Carnegie Arts Center and Mistlin Gallery, April 2 with run through May 11. This show replaces the respective galleries juried Spring Shows, using a common jury in a no category, no size limit exhibition. There were over 450 entries, and only the top third as juried will be exhibited. If you are expecting the usual painting heavy Spring Show, you may be surprised, as most in this show will be 3 dimensional and sculptural works. The 140 final pieces, will be divided between the two galleries, so you will need to visit both Mistlin Gallery and Carnegie Arts to see the full exhibition. This one opens after deadline, so we’ll go over it more next month.
Thanks to Chef View Dana Johnson as I get to appear on her Fox 40 Cooking show. Art View will be her guest to promote Stanislaus Artist Open Studio, with our segment sponsor, Modesto View. Look for us in the 9 am hour, April 4.
