ArtView – April Art

Art View By Jim Christiansen

The April Showers flood of local art events rushes in the first weekend with the Preview Show for 2013 Stanislaus Artist Open Studio Tour, Thursday April 4 at Gallo Center. The preview is FREE, with a chance to see one example from each of the 57 artists on the tour, buy a map, and plenty of time to check out the other local galleries, Chartreuse Muse, Mistlin Gallery, Building Imagination Center, Gallery 909 and enjoy lunch, or coffee, or Mrs. Beckle’s candy within a block’s walk downtown. Maps are $10 for the two day April 6 and 7 weekend event, available at the galleries, and Oakdale Chamber of Commerce, Modesto Convention and Visitors Bureau, Carnegie Arts Center and First Street Frame Shop in Turlock. The 35 studio stops are spread around the county, primarily in Modesto, but with stops in Riverbank and Escalon and Del Rio, with sizeable contingents in Turlock and Oakdale. Hours for the preview show and Open Studio weekend, 10 am to 6 pm.

When you get a map, look on the back for the Raffle entry form to win one of the five Purchase Prize Award winning original art pieces to be given away. Just fill it out, and drop in one of the raffle ticket collection boxes. Art is available to purchase at all the stops, and artists will include demonstrations along the route. The two day event features visual artists in painting, ceramics, sculpture, metal and wood work, art jewelry, mixed media, printmaking, photography and digital art. Students 18 and under admitted FREE, and groups encouraged. Modesto View is one of the advertiser sponsors for the event.

That same weekend, the West Side of the County visual artists will be on display at the Patterson Repertory Theater Art and Wine Gala. The art show and wine drinking supporting the theater company is now in its ninth year, and for the second year coincides with the first night of the Open Studio Tour. Contact the City of Patterson for Art Show entry guidelines and deadlines. Gala Tickets are $25 in advance, $30 at the door, and couples $45. Gala takes place at the Hammon Center, 1033 W. Las Palmas. Need more information, contact Colton Dennis at colton95363@gmail.com

Central California Art Association Spring Show entrants will get their news on entry acceptance for the May 3 show, but for all of us, the Spring Show Gala tickets are on sale for $20 at the Mistlin Gallery. Until then, the new shows are the CCAA members “Shades of Gray” show in black and white, and “Spotlight on Pastels” invitational show featuring Carol David, Janet Hardie and Diedre Wolfley. Mistlin Gallery is open Tuesday through Friday 11:30 to 5, and noon to four on Saturdays.

Carnegie Arts Center Spring Show entries are due April 9. Look up the Turlock group for their free lectures and upcoming shows.

Keep the date, July 27, for “The Romance of Old Habana/ Havana Focus Exhibit” gala at Martin G. Petersen auditorium on H Street. Photographers David Schroeder and Jon Souza show is focus on Cuba, and the gala benefit event July 27 for Mistlin Gallery, features Cuban Food, Cuban rum, cigars, music, dancing, and more.

I hope Modesto View Readers will stop in on my studio on the Open Studio Tour, over on Bodem Street, as I’ve cleared out the garage for guests, happy to have you stop by.
