ArtView – December 2012

Art View By Jim Christiansen

December is the time for Holiday gift buying and local artists have their wares and art on sale at the local galleries and often in the various restaurant venues you find us hanging in.

I have a month long stay at Picasso’s with 11 paintings on display with price tags, along with owner/artist of Picasso’s Jordi Camps. You can also find art on the walls at Deva Cafe and I’ve seen some displayed through the windows of Concetta. Serrano Social Club has art on the wall opposite the FASM mural and upstairs. Check your local downtown eateries on and off the Art Walk to see if there is a local artist on display, and feel free to ask if the art is for sale.

Mistlin Gallery is featuring its “Home for the Holidays” Central California Art Association members show and gift box artists through December 20. Mistlin has become a regular stop to window shop and purchase locally made art, jewelry and other items year-round. Gift Box items are listed at less than $100. Other good spots for locally crafted art, jewelry and other objects include the Chartreuse Muse and Beads of Contentment. Great Art Walk spots that are open on days other than Third Thursdays are Intrinsic Elements and Crow Trading Co. Both feature local art and offer good values for shopping.

The Third Thursday Art Walk this month is December 20, so drop in on Paper Planes Tattoo and Art Gallery, Barkin’ Dog or the Building Imagination Center and get a map to all the venues. Artists will have some special values for the holiday shopper. For more Art Walk information visit modestoartwalk.com. December wrapped up entries to the 2013 Stanislaus Artists Open Studio Tour. Judging and announcement of the 2013 Purchase Prize Awards to be given away during the April 6 and 7, 2013 event will be announced next month. Tickets and maps for the event will go on sale in February and a preview show will take place at Gallo Center for the Arts on April 4.

The annual Delicato Family Vineyards Fine Art Show entries are now available to regional artists. This juried show has several categories and prizes for artists and is often well attended. The show takes place in the tasting room of Delicato Family Vineyards in Manteca.

Mistlin Gallery is seeking student artists for the Central California Art Association 38th Annual Young Masters Show to be held from January 15 to February 9, 2013. Entries will be received January 11 and 12 for artists in pre-school through high school. Categories include painting, drawing, photography and sculpture and are grouped by age. All participants receive a certificate and award winners receive art supplies and ribbons as prizes. The show will be featured during the January Third Thursday Art Walk.

My work is on display with price tags attached at Mistlin Gallery, Picasso’s, Three Little Birds Boutique (on Glass Lane) and All Knotted Up. Stop by one of these locations to find one of my art pieces to consider. Consider buying the works of Jordi Camps, David Beinkowski, Jeff Moore, Mark Holden, Suzanne Staud or any of the many other talented local artists in our area as a gift that can be treasured and enjoyed year-round.
