Art View – Jim Christiansen – January 2015
January marks that rush to New Year’s resolutions, January Clearance Sales and starting new things. With that in mind, here are a few things for Artists and Art fans to consider this month. Get 2015 off to a good start.
Did you forget to get that application in for Stanislaus County Artist Open Studio Tour? You’re not too late. January 15 is the final deadline to get your application in, with the photos and $75 entry fee, to get on the map. Open Studio Weekend is April 25 and 26 and maps will go on sale in March. Were you ignoring Turlock in 2014, and missed the Joan Miro show at Carnegie Arts Center. You can fix that old business by stopping in before the show ends in January 15. Great show. Miss the Fiber Show at Misltin Gallery in November, or want an encore to start your New Year? The Country Crossroads Quilters host their Heart of the Valley Quilt and Textile Arts show at Centre Plaza, January 17 to 18. Admission is $7, kids 12 and under in Free. www.countrycrossroadsquilters.com
Delicato Family Vineyards 27th Annual Fine Art Show is open Jan 14 to February 7. If you’re reading this column at the start of the month, entries open until January 8, with application, fee and delivery of art for consideration at the Tasting Room in Manteca. For a look at the application, click on the web site at www.dfvtastingroom.com
The Central California Art Association New Members show will the featured event at Mistlin Gallery. Show open all month, and featured during Art Walk. This show is limited to the newest members of the gallery, to be followed up next month with the annual CCAA Members “Almond Blossoms’ show.
2015 is also time to get those new calendars. I’ve noted the City of Modesto Environmental Division calendar featuring local artists in previous months. Get one now that you can use them, at Mistlin Gallery. The Parks Group, formerly known as Parks Printing, issued their first Annual Art and Photo contest calendar, and I’m one of the local artists on that one. My month is April. Other Artists include Yvette LaForce, Jen Coffey and nine other local photographers and visual artists. The calendar itself is an interesting design and worth taking a look.
The Third Thursday Art Walk map changes are coming up soon, but new displays will take place across the art walk map.. Best recommendation I can make for January is a new show, “Selfies” by artist Don Hall at The Chartreuse Muse. “Selfies”, is an imaginative trip of self-portraits of Don, as done in the style of other artists. I got to see some of the paintings in advance in his Turlock Studio. This is a fun show, and the artist reception at the Muse will be January 15. Don is also doing work with Potters for Peace, and on the steering committee for Artists Open Studio.
Ed Cesena and I are still showing work at Watts Winery up on Hwy 12 and Locust Tree Rd in Lodi. Stop in and check it out with a sampling in the tasting room. If you have an event for 2015, email me at mercenary_graphics@yahoo.com<mailto:mercenary_graphics@yahoo.com> or post a note on the Artists of Modesto facebook page. Happy New Year to all in the visual arts.
