May is an amazing time of year, the birds are singing, the flowers are blossoming and it is filled with fun and interesting holidays that make you look forward to the summer months. May the force be with you on May 4th. Start your month off with some fun, music and science fiction. The May the Fourth Star Wars Day celebration annual events in happen in downtown Modesto from 3pm to 9pm. Star Wars Day is an officially proclaimed holiday that tributes George Lucas and Star Wars because of their connection to Modesto. Walk on down and you may find yourself immersed amid Star Wars themed activities and the lightsaber battles. Participation and cosplay is encouraged at this free family friendly event for all ages. Continue your month with some music and culture. The Music in the Plaza free music series kicks off Mother’s day weekend in downtown Modesto on May 10th. After the Madre’s Day tribute, the music series happens every Friday throughout summer. Walk on down and you may find yourself enjoying the Ballet Folklorico dancers in addition to cars in the plaza. Also local favorite Latina singer Liliana Hernandez will be serenading the plaza with iconic Mexican songs. Do some last minute Mom’s Day shopping among themed vendors while the kids enjoy activities starting at 5:00pm. You can never get enough music to delight your senses! May 19th welcomes the 3rd annual Modesto Area Porchfest where the community hosts an overabundance of local and central valley musical acts. The free event is all ages and takes place on more than 30 porches throughout the La Loma, College and Downtown Modesto areas, with many being walking distance from each other. Get to know your community and neighbors while you enjoy the beautiful weather this time of year and take in some of the best sounds in local music.

After a successful start to their Reading Series, Prospect Theater Project is thrilled to continue the series! Fondly they refer to their Play Reading Project On May 26th, at 2pm, they’ll bring scripts for The Taming, inspired by Shakespeare’s Shrew, to read aloud, some awesome actors to read, great hors d’oevures to snack on and a seminar style discussion with the actors and directors will follow. All you need to bring is yourself, your ears, and anyone who would like to listen to a fabulous play about a raucous, all female cast set at the Miss America Pageant where beauty and political aspirations unite.
