Start the New Year by Saving!

Start off the New Year with a fresh mindset and fill it with new experiences. The month of January welcomes great ways to embrace & spread positivity and joy as brightly as you can. Ms. M finds herself slinking into an oversized chair in a quiet Cheroot this afternoon musing over her revisit of Kerouac’s On the Road. As she picks up on the spark of wanderlust in her soul she ponders that perhaps coming and going isn’t what feeds the soul, perhaps it’s the adventure of experiencing something new. Start the new year by saving and trying out some things that will lead to new experiences.

Ice skating is something adventurous, many have never tried and will make your heart roar for more. It’s your luck because Modesto on Ice remains open Janurary 1st until January 21st. If you’ve never gone or know someone who hasn’t tried to ice skate definitely go and kick up some ice. Tickets. $15 adult/$12 child. 11th & K Sts. www.modestoonice.com

An old way to see the new world inexpensively is in the cinema. If you’ve visited The State Theatre a million times before, try going to an event night for a slice of different. Dr Zhivago is presented on January 9th by the Avid Readers Club and will host a discussion of the book before the showing of the film. Book & movie lovers alike will be transported to a different time and place and be delighted to meet others seeking the same adventure. Doors at 5:30p.m. Discussion at 6 p.m. Film 6:30 p.m. Bon voyage. More info: www.thestate.org

A great way to embrace adventure is to take a look in the past. One of our local free resources, The McHenry Museum is free and open to the public during the week Tues-Sat 12p-4pm, with a great deal of information on the Modesto area. Take your own personal time traveling adventure, check it out and maybe become a docent. The Current Exhibit is the Tuolumne River Woodworkers Association Annual Show. 14th & I Sts. www.mchenrymuseum.org
