BluesView: October Nights

By Earl Matthews

Kicking things off this month is the downtown Sampler, there will be bands all over downtown and samples on offering for one ticket price Oct 2nd. On the 3rd my Big Earl’s Blues Jam at Fired Up Grill in Ceres, Bring your axe and sit in with the band for a night of open to all Blues bliss. On the 4th and 5th, you can check out the blues-rock legend that is Tommy Castro and the Painkillers at Black Oak Casino. Tommy and the guys are a staple of the blues scene and have been touring all over the world for a long time.

I’m taking my band the Poorhouse Millionaires up to Sonora on the 5th, we are going back to the Waterwheel Saloon and Pizza Company. This spot is one of my favorite places to play and it’s only half on account of how delicious the food is.

On the 6th you have options coming out of your ears. You can check out Tony and the Tufftimes at Del Osso Farms, make a trip to see Gary Gervase and Kickstart Blues at Oktoberfest in Hughson, Bluesbox Bayou at the Eagles Hall in Modesto of you could head out to Denair to see Sunhouse Blues and Gospel Band at the Conservatory Theater. Say that 3 times fast.

Last month was huge for Jeramy Norris and the Dangerous Mood with a bunch of big shows but, if you missed your chance to see them at Black Oak. You can catch Jeramy and the boys at Woodbridge Crossing on the 12th. On the 18th you have a chance to catch Modesto’s own Tony and the Tufftimes at Black Oak Casino. Tony has been going at it around 10 years in our area, please support them on their big night.

Back at Black Oak on the 25th, you can catch Catfish Daniels doing his Stevie Ray Vaughan Experience. I have had the pleasure of playing with him and he is the real McCoy. He can play his ass off and his band brings the vibe and fun of a huge blues rock show.

Finishing the month off in style is the Beards Brew & BBQ festival at the Turlock County Fairgrounds. This is a free, 21+ event with a ton of things to do and a lot of beers to sample. Live music including Valley Fire and Big Earl and the Cryin’ Shame. Beer Pong Tournaments, pie eating contests, roller derby, beard contested, free food samples, BMX stunt shows adult face painting and bikini body painting. It’s going to be a ton of fun and you can’t beat that entrance fee of free-fifty.

I hope you all have a great month and I will see you out at a show.
