GEEKView: Cars and Comics
By Middagh Goodwin
I am sure by now everyone has watched Avengers Infinity Wars, Deadpool 2 and Solo a Star Wars Story(no spoilers to those who are taking their sweet time to watch these.) The Incredibles 2 and Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom are both out later this month and I am sure some of you are looking forward to one if not both of these. I remember when we were lucky to get one or two movies a year let alone a month to be excited about.
I am hoping by now you have all heard about Modesto’s Graffiti-Con Comic and Car Show or I have not been doing my job. On Sunday, July 1st taking place inside Modesto Centre Plaza enjoy a single day Pop Culture and Comic-Con. There will be a large number of curated vendors with everything from comic books to records, Star Wars and retro toys. Meet artists including Mike Hampton, Mike Pascale, the Turlock Toon Sqwad and Authors Angelique S Anderson and Kate Hadley, creators like Dennis Knight and Dez Demise of Pronto Comics. There will be cool panels, a Cosplay Contest hosted by the NorCal Cosies, the Geek Fashion Show presented by Douggary Grant. Also excited to have cosplayers Robin Art & Cosplay(from France), Jia Jem, Carma Doll Cosplay at the event as special guests. Outside in the 10th Street Plaza check out a wide variety classic cars. Modesto is American Graffiti and the home of Star Wars so it makes perfect sense to combine our love for Sci-Fi. Comics and Car Culture into one suped-up event. Tickets are $3 in advance and $5 at the door(bring a can food item for a dollar off), this is a family-friendly event where kids under 12 get in Free. You can purchase your tickets at Invincible Comics, Hero’s Vault and Modesto Downtown Improvement District or online at brownpapertickets.com. Proceeds from this event will be donated to Modesto Area Music Association a 501c-3 organization. If you are an artist, vendor or car owner who would like to be part of this event please contact graffiticon209@gmail.com for more info.
On July 4th, new comic book day, Hero’s Vault will be moving to a new location 321 McHenry Ave Suite B 1, behind P.Wexford’s and changing their name to Modesto Comic. They are currently located at 1100 Carver Rd Suite 4, stop by for all your comic and gaming needs.
Ohana Con has released a flood on Northern California Con Circuit with shows just about every weekend. You can expect to find everything from Comic Books and Pop figures to Candles and jewelry. Admission is $7 at the door.
