MADWEEK 2019: Bauhaus 100 – Modesto
Our city will be spinning with all things design, September 21-28, with Modesto Architecture & Design Week (MADWEEK)
Since 2008, Modesto has been host to an award-winning week of all things architecture and design that has attracted as many as 5,000 people annually to our city. The Modesto Architecture and Design Week (MADWEEK) celebrates architecture and design as both an art and a science, and heightens public awareness of architecture and design and of the value that architects and designers play in creating more beautiful, creative, innovative and livable communities. MADWEEK celebrates all design disciplines, including: architecture, fashion design, graphic design, interior design, landscape architecture, product design, social design, and user experience (UI/UX) design.
The theme for MADWEEK 2019 is “Bauhaus 100 – Modesto.” Founded in Dessau, Germany, in 1919, the Bauhaus was an iconic design school whose modernist approach influenced the education, practice and theory of art and design worldwide, including here in Modesto. In 2019, a global movement is underway to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Bauhaus and its myriad of contributions to society. The global influence of Bauhaus can be directly traced to and seen in downtown Modesto today.
“MADWEEK 2019 is about celebrating our unique historical connection to the Bauhaus and acknowledging the important contribution design makes to a vibrant city,” says Lee Davis, founder of the Modesto Design Collective (MO.DE) and design curator with the Modesto Art Museum. “As we approach the sesquicentennial of Modesto in 2020, our local design community is a powerful ally in envisioning our collective future.”
MADWEEK 2019 will be a week of creative and inspiring events in venues across the City of Modesto, from Saturday, September 21st through
Saturday, September 28th. The MADWEEK 2019 schedule includes a myriad of events designed to inspire, including featured speakers, films, family & kids day, networking events, studio visits, tours, workshops, and more.
MADWEEK highlights include:
· MADWEEK Opening Evening: MADWEEK kicks off with a celebration of the 100th anniversary of the Bauhaus, including a featured speaker Sean Ragasa, Design Director at Skidmore, Owings & Merrill LLP (SOM) in San Francisco, and lead architect for the new courthouse being constructed in downtown Modesto.
