Aqua Aerobics 101
Swimming is a great part of my training as a tri-athlete although it can be somewhat monotonous going back and forth 128 times in a 25 meter pool. But there is an alternative if you’re not training for a long distance swim. Sherrie DeBerry has been teaching aqua aerobics since 1988 and I always get a sunshine smile greeting from her and her students when I come across them at my gym’s pool.
Aqua Aerobics is a great cardio workout with low impact on one’s joints. During her hour long class, they practice several different exercises that would include resistant training with Water Noodles, Buoy-Barbells, Kickboards and balls. No worries if you’re not the strongest swimmer, the class takes place in the shallowest part of the pool, so if you lose your balance you just stand up.
Sherrie’s Aqua Aerobics takes place at The Brenda Athletic Club on Norwegian in Modesto 4 days a week Monday through Thursday at 8:00am. The class is co-ed so it’s a great way to share some fitness with your partner. The pool is heated so the class is year round; rain or shine, fog or wind, they are always in the pool. In fact the only time the class would be canceled is if an electrical rainstorm was in our area. Some of the biggest benefits to her aqua aerobics class would be cardio, core, strength training, toning, stretching, flexibility and balance without a lot of jarring and pressure on your joints. This is why most doctors actually refer a lot of their patients to her class.
According to The Aquatic Exercise Association you can expect to burn 400 to 500 calories per hour when exercising in the water. Additionally water offers 12 times the resistance of air which helps to improve muscle strength.
Sherrie’s message: “Come Join US! It is SO MUCH FUN! We laugh a lot and have become great friends like a little aqua family. I’ll give you a great workout! We have a lot of different ages, shapes and sizes. Some are in great shape and some are recovering from an injury or surgery. No matter what level you are at I will work with you and help you. Water aerobics is a great thing and you deserve something GREAT!”
