FitView: Roller Skating Fitness
By Efren Martinez
It’s hard to believe that getting around with some wheels on your feet can be healthy for you. It’s true! Roller skating is a great way to stay healthy and fit while having fun. This is of course if you can keep yourself from falling and getting hurt. As for myself, I never mastered the art of roller skating. I very much tried in my younger days when falling meant I’d just bounce back up as kids do. Truth be told my kid days are behind me and I don’t bounce anymore if I fall. In fact, if I fall down I may not get back up till the next day.
All kidding aside, I’d totally recommend taking up roller skating if at one point in your life you were able to master it. I’m sure it’s like riding a bike, once you know it you never forget. I still have buddies from high school that can do some amazing tricks with skates and skateboards. Remarkable yes, but not so when they fall. Friends let’s be smart when exploring or even continue any fitness lifestyle and always wear a helmet when skating. I would also advise you to wear knee pads, elbow pads and wrist guards. Let’s face it if you fall at any age and get seriously hurt with a broken leg, wrist or even a head injury your roller skating days are over along with a lot of other things.
Fitness for me has never been about how cool I can look, it’s always been safety first. Being injured stinks! Let’s be smart about any kind of fitness we choose to explore. Lately, there has been a lot of talk about building a skating rink in Modesto. May I suggest one not in downtown Modesto but over at the Mary Grogan Soccer park that has plenty of unfinished land? In fact, it only has dirt in the park surrounding the soccer fields. So why not add some grass, a playground, fitness stations and a skating rink to go with the beautiful soccer fields. This would be the perfect family-friendly fitness lifestyle park. Well, these are just a few of my own grand illusions speaking out loud. Always remember that whatever fitness you choose to practice please be safe about it. Cheers to your health!
