ModestoView News Letter

Greetings Friends

Here we are, knock knock knockin’ on February’s door.  As we all collectively gather to cheer on the 49ers this weekend, it is a reality check weekend for Cleveland fans like myself.  Oh well, there is always next year.

This is going to be an action packed weekend, loaded with comedy, crab feeds, Oscar shorts and so much more. Those of you that grew up in the 70s remember the Carpenters.  This band does not usually get the tribute treatment, but their songs, mostly written by Paul Williams are pretty amazing and you should check this tribute out tonight at the Gallo Center.  Pretty good date idea if you ask me and will bring back those shopping at Beno’s, Heat Wave skate park and KFIV memories.

There are FIVE crab feeds this weekend.  Here is the deal, they are all for great causes and the fresh Dungeness Crab is AMAY-ZING this year.  So what do you have to lose Check out Middagh Goodwin’s CrabView below for the deets. If you have wondered about the OSCAR award category for best short films, the State Theatre is featuring those this weekend.  ( psst –  they are having a Red Carpet party on Feb 9 to watch the big show on the big screen so get your tux and gown ready)

Best news of course if that the February ModestoView is printing as you read this. It will be on the stands and in the mailboxes February 1, on time as always reaching all across our region. We feature some great love stories, a look back at Modesto from 1900-1920 as we celebrate Modesto’s 150 in each issue this year.  It is a great look back and we will have a great wrap up book at the end of the year.  If you have things you want to contribute about our Modesto history, please let me know.  There is also a special Black History Month presentation by Tasha Williams that you will find really interesting.

ModestoView is here to tell our positive story and encourage others to do the same.  It is up to all of us to celebrate the history that makes us who we are and make sure we build on this foundation to create a better future.  Authentic creative cities are the winners of the future and thanks to you, the awesome ModestoView reader, you are a part of this.  As Feb begins let’s all make sure we are out there spreading good news and create positive solutions to our issues. We can do it.  Feel free to reach out to me with your ideas at chrism@modestoview.com

Hope to see you out and about and let’s celebrate out community this weekend.
Chris Murphy

The BigView: Modesto 150

By Chris Murphy

Modesto turns 150 years old this year. Throughout 2020 as part of the Modesto 150 celebration, we will be featuring Modesto’s history all the way from the early days through today. We will try to make this interesting, fun to read and lay it out in bite-sized pieces that hopefully will encourage you to learn more at the McHenry Museum, and other historical sites like HistoricModesto.com where some of these images have come from. We will be covering our full history this year by the decade, and if you want to contribute, please email me at chrism@modestoview.com Read More
