ModestoView News Letter

Greetings Friends!

It is almost time for the 19th Modesto Area Music Awards and thanks to all of you that voted for your favorite band, musician, event and venue.  Find out who wins the MAMA on October 16, live from the fabulous historic State Theatre, featuring exclusive live performances of the nominees and results of the MAMA Votes.  Each winner will receive the coveted “CarHop Trophy” designed by Becky Murphy and laser cut by Beeler industries.

There will be a special celebration of Steve Ashman, founder of ZaSu Pitts Memorial Orchestra who will receive a Lifetime Achievement Award for his amazing work as a professional musician and his work here in Modesto as the executive director of CASA.  The MAMAs will feature a special performance by ZaSu Pitts Memorial Orchestra and there be a special tribute to the Modesto-area musicians we have lost this year, Grace Lieberman, Rudy Merino, Abraham Guerrero, Braden Hamilton, Art Mataka, David & Fred Perez and Sean Backs.  Chris Ricci and I are so glad the MAMAs are still going strong after 19 years.  Thanks to Middagh Goodwin for being an amazing MAMA Administrator.

The MAMAS will be broadcast live on www.ModestoView.com beginning at 6:30 pm courtesy of Central Valley TV.

This is a special time as we enjoy fall, festivals, live music, tasty local food and so many of the things that make Modesto a special place to live.  ModestoView has been a champion for the local art, music, culture and cuisine for over 20 years and we work hard on our mission to “Serve Civic Pride Daily”.  Remember to take time to celebrate the good in your life and community too.  ModestoView is the perfect tonic for when you are feeling down in the dumps.  Please enjoy our local music, celebrate the MAMA winners and next time you go out, go see your favorite band.

Thank you for reading and listening.  – Chris Murphy

Steve Ashman MAMA Award winner and Community Advocate
It is so great when people that excel in one field and then use their talents, fame and skills to do great works in their community. One local organization is so very fortunate to have one such person, Steve Ashman. Steve is the executive director of CASA, Court Appointed Special Advocates, a local branch of a national nonprofit that advocates for abused and neglected children in the court system. Read More

ComedyView: Laughs are Getting Stronger

By Felicia Aleman

Hello, hello, hello. It’s my View-a-versary! One year ago I started writing the Comedy View column. Thanks to all five of you for reading. Send cake.
October = MAMA’s. During a lapse of judgement, I asked the comic MAMAnees why they should win. Taylor Evans: I want to show other crappy comics like Jason Sohm we have a chance in the world. Read More

October is here along with one of my favorite childhood traditions… BOOing! BOOing is sort of a Halloween version of doorbell ditching, but there’s a twist. You prepare a basket of small gifts and candies on the porch, along with a BOO poem and instructions. If you are BOOed it’s your turn to BOO someone, but don’t get caught! Read More
