Greetings View – I Love October

Greetings Modesto Friends,

I love October. It is amazing, the smells, the tastes and the cool breezes. This is the turn, it’s the transition from a hot summer to a nice cool fall. There is this fall freshness, the smell of fall get intense, with fall cooking, farmer’s markets, and the menus at restaurants change too, flipping over to the cold weather foods. Anything with butter nut squash is at the top of my list and dare I say it; Pumpkin Spice but I love the smell of warm apple cider. It is good for my heart too now that it has been shocked back into shape.

Thank you all for the well wishes during this little cardio episode I went though. I seriously love my friends and family.

But friends, Modesto is under attack from a pair of TV shows about Scott Peterson (further known as “he who will not be named”) Modesto is taking a beating so a bunch of TV execs make money off of us. What do we do? We stay “Modesto Strong” and show that our community is so much more than the news. We are better and we need to spread the word. That is why I started ModestoView back in 1997 so that we know about the good in our community. We have fantastic neighborhoods, great community events, true volunteer inspiration, team-work, dining that rivals anywhere, arts and culture that make us proud and friends and family that support each other. This is the real Modesto. Let’s spend this time together, promoting each other and our lives with positive information and activities. When I meet people, and they say, “Modesto, isn’t that where……” and I cut them off and say “George Lucas. Yes, we are the home of American Graffiti and the birthplace of Star Wars”. It is amazing how differently the conversation goes after that. You can do it to. Say no to trolling, negativity and celebrate the people and events that try to make a positive difference.

So let’s get back to why I love October.
For me, this is ROCKTOBER! The MAMA Awards will be at the State Theatre on October 10. Chris Ricci and I had a vision in 2000, to celebrate the local music with all of the style and the ceremony of the Grammy awards and show that our local music talent is special and that they are appreciated. This is truly an evening where the entire music industry comes together, all genres, all radio stations and all of the promoters. This year, the celebration continues and we honor Modestan Michael Allsup of Three Dog Night, who through all these years of global tours, gold and platinum records, continues to live here. We salute all of the 200 nominees and hope that you will all vote at www.modestoareamusic.com and tune in to ModestoView to watch the show live.

Most importantly, fall is the time for family. We are all busy, so many fundraisers and events, but nothing is more important than being a family. Our door is always open to our kids and we are so luck that Madison and Ryan like to stop by and that we get to visit Berkeley regularly for Abbey and love our Cal Football. Our patio has become a great place to spend a fall evening.

Best of all this month? Halloween! This is a national holiday at our house and we hope you will stop by our haunted home for some trick or treat. Can’t wait for the spooking to begin.

Thank you Modesto friends for having a local business, creating a local event, paining a local picture, recording a local song as we are all the richer because you do and ModestoView is here to help spread the word of your good efforts.

Thank you and Happy Haunting,

Chris Murphy
