In Memoriam
Modesto lost two of our cultural characters. Harley Cooney, also known as the Mayor of J Street has passed away. The former Army Vet owned Action Rubber Stamp in downtown from 1962-1989. He was a regular fixture in downtown Modesto, in particular at his table at Deva Cafe and was loved by so many. His happy spirit will be missed and his charm and love of downtown Modesto will never be forgotten. Also passing away last month was Ivory Lubie, regularly seen wearing her tiara, was a regular at many a downtown location, primarily Minnie’s and the Boardroom. Her story fascinating as a former dance hall owner in San Francisco and as columnist for the SF Examiner back in the day. You always had a great conversation with Ivory. These are the people that brighten our day, and we will always remember them as they were unforgettable. – Chris Murphy
