MAMA reView By Chris Murphy
The 14th Annual 2013 MAMAs were amazing. Modesto made global music history on October 23. The Modesto area music industry gathered at the historic State Theatre to celebrate 19 MAMA Award winners and present an award to the legendary K.C. “Don Juan” Maddox. Don and his family, the Maddox Brothers and Rose, invented Rockabilly music back in the late 1930s and 1940s. The percussive slappin’ bass beat become the Rock of Rock ‘n Roll in the 50s. This was an amazing night complete with a video award presentation by country star Marty Stuart, a Rockabilly history video by Chris Murphy and Don Maddox stories by the Modesto Bee’s Jeff Jardine and a special Rockabilly proclamation by Modesto Mayor Garrad Marsh. Tony Trevino, Anthony Acevedo and Amie Alton put together a vintage Rockabilly combo so that Don Maddox could perform his legendary music. Don played his fiddle, cracked his signature jokes and enjoyed the evening of musical celebration and the Modesto area showed Don our gratitude and respect.
The MAMAs are one of the most fun nights of the year as all of our genres of bands, musicians, radio stations and venue operators all gets together to celebrate our local music scene. There were epic performances by Breaking Chainz with Megan Robertson, Clockwork Hero, Christine McGrew, Darlin’ Clementine, Triple DDD, Stop Motion Poetry, Jeramy Norris and the Dangerous Mood, Your Band Sucks, A La Lune, Cobalt 45, Chris Teichera, Tom VandonAvond, and DJ Tease spun the evening.
Many thanks to the State Theatre for hosting this wonderful night of music. Thanks also to ModestoView and Sierra Pacific Warehouse Group for arranging Don and Barbara Maddox’s transportation from Oregon, the Doubletree Hotel for hosting the Don and Barbara. Also thanks to Chris Ricci Presents and Richard Meeker for making the show run smooth and to ModestoView for powering the MAMA Presentation and along with Elliot Gage, the MAMA Website. Special thanks to Laser Voodoo for the first ever MAMA Laser Show! Thanks also to the MAMA team of Blia Vang, Jennifer Allsup, Chris Ricci, Chris Murphy, Jill Ferris, Ruben Porras, Nicole VanDyle and Earl Mathews for making this all happen.
