MAMA View By Middagh Goodwin
Modesto and the surrounding area has so much talent and it is evident every year in the fall when the nominees for the Modesto Area Music Awards are announced and winners are celebrated. Each month I am going to showcase nominees and winners along side talented musicians, comics, promoters and venues that will for sure be future MAMA hall of famers. The Brewhouse at Hero’s won Best Venue 2013 and has not lost a beat in the months that followed showing why musicians and fans love the place so much and not just for the great food and large selection of beer on tap. The Brewhouse is jam packed with great shows and several MAMA Alumni. Starting off the month 2/7 is a great Blues show featuring Big Earl & the Cryin’ Shame(2009 Best Blues)with Harlis Sweetwater Band, Rob Hill Band, Jeramy Norris Band and Prof Maxx Smith. On 2/16 VMI Rocks(who gave us Breaking Chainz(2012 Youth Band) and High Voltage(2011 Youth Band) will be showcasing a new batch of young musicians ready to take this years prize. Rocking the joint on 2/28 are the Allusp Brothers performing as Levee(DAM- 2010 Rawk/JAM) joined by Josh Rosenblum Band(2012 Pop Rock)and more this show will not disappoint. The Fat Cat is not as active as in past years but on 2/22 it is sure to be packed with the Moonshine Bandits(2007 Best Urban/Hip Hop) performing their brand of Country Hip Hop. Performing every Sunday at DEVA Cafe the Poorhouse Millionaires(2012 Best Blues) gives you music to enjoy your breakfast and morning coffee. Nic Padilla Promotions has Broken Trojan (2013 Rock) along side Indian Runner and Victoria Boyington on 2/7 and Nothing But Losers(2011 Metal),Better Left Unsaid(2004 Hard Rock) with Motogrator, Brutal Innocence and Level 12 at the Sky Lounge on 2/13 a new venue that will feature Hard Rock/Heavy Metal and Punk. Every Sunday you will find a new batch of performers at the Queen Bean’s(2013 Restaurant/Cafe)Open Mic Night(2013 Small Event/Series) many MAMA nominees have emerged from this Open Mic over the years. There is no doubt several of the bands performing on these bills will be nominated in 2014 and at least a few will win.
If the above was the only things happening you would have a busy month of live entertainment, but wait there is more.
Starting the month off at the Brewhouse 2/3, I am very excited to see The Toasters(NYC SKA) who have been performing all over the world since 1981 and who’s front man Bucket Hingley was the owner of MOON Records the label that introduced SKA to the masses with records by Hepcat, The Slackers, Let’s Go Bowling, Dance Hall Crashers and many more. Joining them are MONKEY(Asian Man Records Artist) who are celebrating 18 years and Beneficial Medicine(featuring members of Before Twenty/Trashboat and Agent42). Valentines Day come on out for a night of laughter at the Brew Ha Hearts at the Brewhouse with Rick Pulido http://rickpulido.com/, Ellis Rodriguez www.ellisrodriguez.com<http://www.ellisrodriguez.com/> and hosted by Jimmie Menezes. The Brew Ha Ha is a new Comedy Series brought to you each month by Jimmie Menezes and I, showcasing some of the best comedians in the area. Laughter is the best medicine and we have plans to keep you happy, healthy and laughing in the year to come. On 2/21 Rock Nominees, Mid October and Renegade Conspiracy invade the Brewhouse and are joined by Machuko and Time&Distance(from West Virginia) if you like loud fast and heavy Alt Rock then this show is for you.
