MAMAView – I Want April!

MAMAView By Middagh Goodwin

Wow is it April already? Spring has sprung and the weather has been so nice. It is time we all get away from the hustle and grind of everyday life and enjoy some great live music. Here in Modesto we are actually quite lucky because just about every touring act drives through our city and we have been getting more and more to STOP and play for us. April is jam packed with great acts from all over the country and the world performing just for us.

Kicking things off right away Friday April 4th at The Brewhouse at Hero’s we have The Midnight Ghost Train(Kansas) playing some heavy blues fueled rock and roll joined by Divest Dreggs(members of Nothing But Losers 2011 Metal) and Breaking Chainz(2013 Youth Band). Over at the Other Place 209 Productions has a Rock Showcase with Broken Trojan(2013 Rock), Antithesis of It, 17Ten, American Heart Throb and Premartial Death, if you like it loud and local this is the place to be.

80’s Legendary singer of Bow Wow Wow-Annabella Lwin(UK) will be performing all their hits (I want Candy, Go Wild in the Country, Do You Wanna Hold Me…) and more on Saturday April 5th at the Brewhouse. Moon Trent (who may just have the most MAMA nominations) and Callbox’s Victoria Boyington will be completing the nights lineup, this is a show you will not want to miss and it is going to be a real treat to have a talent like Annabella in such a small venue.

Another international act will be hitting Modesto and the Brewhouse on Sunday April 6th for the Rockabilly Cruise Night. The Creepshow(Canada) is a female fronted Rockabilly Act on Hellcat/Stomp Records touring supporting a brand new album, The Phenomenauts will be playing their own brand of Rocket Roll, Black Rose Phantoms(Smelvis Records) and The Stage Coach Drifters(featuring Tony T of the Pendletons(2012 Rockabilly) round out the night. If you haven’t seen The Creepshow or the Phenomenauts you owe it to yourselves to make it out to this smoking hot event.

Tuesday April 8th Break Anchor(MI)featuring the lead singer of the Suicide Machines, Point of View(Hella Mad Records) and The Strange Party(ex Final Summation) will get you pogoing, skanking and slam dancing at the Brewhouse. The Brew Ha Ha Comedy Series continues and gets bigger and better at the Brewhouse . Friday April 18th Phil Johnson will headline an All Star night of great comedy joined by Guiness Record Comedian Andrew Ouellette, FC Sierra, Jason”Violation”Sohm, Adam Pearlstein and as always Hosted by Jimmie Menezes.

On Friday April 25th The Party on High Street(Canada), Braata(2011 Pop Rock), A La Lune and Terrible Timing(ex Desa/Link80/Kings of Today) bringing a night of Funky Reggae and SKA to the Brewhouse. Reggae is big in Modesto and the locals on this bill are red hot.

Take the short drive up the 99 to Manteca and the Rusty Hook on Saturday April 26th for a night of Metal at the Rusty Hook with Better Left Unsaid(2004 Hard Rock), Stigmurder and Blastlung. Always fun to end the month with a nice loud Rockin Metal Showcase.

Remember every Sunday morning at Cafe Deva the Poorhouse Millionaires(2012 Blues)play music to get you going, so enjoy a bite to eat and a cup of coffee while listening to some great homegrown tunes. Sunday Nights at the Queen Bean you can find tomorrows MAMA winners today with the Queen Bean Open Mic (2013 Small Event) always something different and someone new. If you have not been to the fabulous State Theatre in awhile do yourself a favor and stop in, they have made some improvements in recent months a brand new state of the art digital projector and marquee out front. Each year the MAMA Awards are hosted at the state and it is one of the gems of the Central Valley.

A May Day Preview so you have more then enough time to ask for it off and make plans to be at this show. May 28th the Kings of Rockabilly Reverend Horton Heat returns to Modesto and the Brewhouse for one night only. Joining them will be 21st Century Rock and Roll Giants-The Atom Age(Asian Man Records) and from Stockton The(Secret)Hitchers who if you saw them with Lydia Loveles in March you know how good they are.

So if we want to keep seeing great live acts stop off in Modesto we all need to do our part and go to a show at least once a month(week…) and bring a friend. Friends don’t let friends miss great shows.
