MAMAView: Two Decades with Ears to the Future

I have said it before and I will say it again, who would have imagined that when Murphy and Ricci decided to host a local music award show that it would still be going strong twenty years later? The landscape of local music has waxed and waned over the last two decades. Many of the clubs, that dominated the scene have closed their doors, bands have broken up and events have come and gone. Growing from seven awards to over twenty, representing everything from Pop to Hard Rock, Latin and Punk. Members of the Youth Bands were not even born when the MAMAs first happened at Club Maxx back in the year 2000.

This year we are having some very special performances to celebrate the twentieth anniversary of the Modesto Area Music Awards. Flying Blind who dominated the clubs, festivals and the airwaves back before Y2K will be performing their hit song “Smokescreen.” Another mainstay of the early MAMAs was UVR, you may remember hearing “Got 2 Girlfriends” playing on repeat on area radio. They toured the US and released three albums between 2001-2007. This year there will be a very special performance from the “Women of the MAMAs” Shelly Streeter, Marirose Powell, Patty Castillo Davis, Mattea Overstreet and Tiffany Rose Delacruz, singing a medley of songs celebrating Woodstocks 50th Anniversary.

The MAMAs will celebrate and honor the radio Disc Jockeys of KFIV, the legendary radio station that played the Rock & Roll from the 50s through the 70s, with a staff of iconic DJs, they played the local hits, broadcast from the drive-ins and hosted the battle of the bands and played the soundtrack of our life for decades. This award is presented by the Modesto Bee.

The MAMAs will be presented at the fabulous historic State Theatre on Tuesday, October 15th, beginning at 6:00 pm. This is an invitation-only black-tie event. All nominees and guests attend free of charge. Each category winner receives the treasured laser cut stainless steel MAMA Carhop Award, donated each year by Beeler Industries.
