MJC Lifeguard Certification Courses Offered

Lifeguard certification courses offered through MJC’s Community Education

(Modesto, CA) – Are you interested in applying for a summer job as a pool lifeguard? Red Cross Lifeguard Certification is required for these positions and you can acquire certification through a course offered by Modesto Junior College Community Education.

Classes will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the MJC Pool and Men’s PE 110 on East Campus, and two classes are available: March 22, 23, 29 and 30, and a second class on May 3, 10, 17 and 18. Participants must be at least 15 years old by the last day of the course. Both classes will be taught by Brian Uriebe and the fee is $220 which includes a mask kit. Books will be available for purchase in class for $37. Participants who choose not to purchase a book, will have one to use throughout the class.

Upon successful completion of the course, participants will be certified in lifeguard training, CPR/AED for the professional rescuer and healthcare provider, and first aid.

In addition to a swimming pre-test on the first day of class, the course will also cover rescue skills for shallow and deep water, spinal injury management skills, CPR skills, AED skills, first aid skills, and written and in-water skills tests.

The pre-test will include a 300 yard, not timed swim (mix of front crawl and breaststroke); a 20 yard swim to retrieve a 10 pound brick at a depth of seven to 10 feet, returning to the starting point with the brick and exiting the pool without any aid within one minute and 40 seconds, and treading water for two minutes using legs only. All participants must be able to pass the pre-test to continue with the course.

Participants should be prepared to be in the water on days one, two and four. Day three will be entirely focused on CPR/first aid training. Class members will need to bring a pen, swim suit, towel, food/beverage, and a photo ID as proof of age (passport, driver’s license, permit, etc.).
