MJC Speech Team “sweeps up” with first-place win
The Modesto Junior College Speech Team won the first place sweepstakes award on January 31 at the Talk Hawk Invitational in Livermore, CA.
The tournament was Harry Potter themed—complete with wandering Dementors and floating candles—and the MJC team rose to the magic of the occasion, taking home 20 awards. Collectively, MJC won the team sweepstakes award with an impressive 106 points, surpassing second with a hefty 14-point margin.
In persuasive speaking, James Baugh achieved first place in the open division. In novice, first-time competitor Deseree Jones won first, followed closely by Daniel Johnson in fourth. Baugh earned second place in open informative speaking, while Caterina Grossi took sixth.
Jon Sahlman won first place in open impromptu and Rick Morris led the novice division in first place, with newcomer Kendall Mead landing third and Jones bringing home fourth. In open extemporaneous speaking, Sahlman earned third, Baugh won fourth, and Megan Chatelain took fifth.
Other trophies included Baugh’s first place in after dinner speaking, Sahlman’s first place in communication analysis, and Tyrus Loveless’ fourth place in dramatic interpretation. Baugh and Sahlman also achieved first and second overall speaker awards.
