Despite not having any individuals finish among the top six, the Pirates used balanced team scoring to win the state tournament by four strokes under the defending state champion Sierra College from Rocklin, CA.
MJC led the 8-team field after the first day with a 4-person score of 316 and added a 317 on Monday for a two-day total of 633, with Sierra College posting a 313 on Monday to earn state runner-up honors with a two-day total of 637. Santa Barbara City College finished third with a team total of 641.
The MJC team had the most returning players at this year’s state championship, with sophomore Janita Vongphoumy, (graduate of Central Valley High School in Ceres) posting a 3-over-par 75 on Monday, while sophomore Brooke Vierra, (graduate of eCademy Charter H.S. in Turlock) and sophomore Alyse Padilla, (graduate of Enochs H.S. in Modesto) each carding 77’s, and sophomore Shawna Ratto, (graduate of Ripon H.S.) scoring an 88.
MJC Women’s Golf Coach Milan Motroni said, “I knew the team had it in them, but we were always just a step behind during the season. However, when it counted the most in the final tournament of the year, the teamstepped up and shot some of their best two-day rounds to beat the favorites Sierra and Santa Barbara.”
