Mobile Farm Stand for Low Income Families

lp

Interfaith Ministries of Greater Modesto will launch our Free Mobile Farmers Market this week, as part of their “Feed Modesto” campaign, addressing food deserts and food insecurity in the greater Modesto area and Stanislaus County.  This program will deliver the bounty from our Gleaning and Gathering program, our Mat Lena Garden, and produce donated from concerned members of our community to neighborhoods in need.  Low-income individuals will be invited to “shop” for fresh fruits and vegetables in a farm stand-like setting, at no cost.

The goals of this program are to increase fruit and vegetable intake in low-income households, to give participants a positive consumer experience related to healthy foods, to familiarize children with a wide variety of fruits and vegetables, and to fill nutritional gaps in neighborhoods where fresh foods are not readily available or affordable.

The Teichert Foundation and Doctors Hospital have helped to make this program a reality, as well as countless local farmers and home gardeners.
