INVESTIGATION OF A CITIZEN
…ABOVE SUSPICION
112 Minutes
Rated R
Italian with English subtitles
On the eve of his promotion, Rome’s chief homicide investigator, the Inspector (Gian Maria Volonte, the bad guy in A Fistful of Dollars and For A Few Dollars More), goes to his mistresses Augusta’s apartment and murders her. Littering the crime scene with fingerprints, footprints and dozens of clues, he plans to show the world just how powerful he really is: a man above suspicion. With the Inspector’s help, his successor eventually makes an arrest. Despite every clue pointing to the Inspector, Augusta’s downstairs’ neighbor, a student, is accused of the murder. Paranoid and completely exhausted, the Inspector, whose associates have refused to believe the obvious, finally confesses to the crime.
Featuring by a haunting score by Ennio Morricone of “spaghetti western” fame, Investigation is widely considered one of the best international films of the 1970’s, winning an Oscar for Best Foreign Film and double honors at The Cannes Film Festival.
“A paranoid police procedural, a perverse parable about the corrupting elements of power, and a candidate for the greatest predated Patriot Act movie ever.” Time Out (New York)
