Modesto Junior College hosts High School Orchestra Day
Nine Stanislaus County high schools will perform in Modesto Junior College’s High School Orchestra Day on Thursday, November 5, from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Auditorium of the Performing and Media Arts Center on East Campus. The event is free and open to the public. MJC Community Orchestra conductor and string professor, Anne Martin, will host the event.
The high school orchestra students will perform works by a variety of composers including Clarke, Mendelssohn, Newbold, O’Fallon, Spata, Susato, and Vivaldi. Beyer High School will present The Evil Eye and The Hideous Heart by Alan Lee Silva, based on “The Telltale Heart” by Edgar Alan Poe. MJC music majors Sydney Cripe, Anthony Houth and Manuel Manriquez will join the Teacher’s Chamber Ensemble in a performance of Peter Warlock’s Capriol Suite.
Participating high schools include Beyer, directed by Marcos Rivera; Downey, directed by Joanne Neuffer; Davis, directed by Mark Davila; Turlock, led by Joe Tovar; Pitman, led by Don Grishaw; Enochs directed by Phil Vallejo; Modesto, directed by Matt Cover; Gregori , led by Dan Bryan, and Johansen led by Brad Hart. Each high school will perform a 10 minute selection of orchestra repertoire.
The event will end with a famous Irish tune, the Kesh Jig, performed by over 200 high school string musicians. The community is invited to come enjoy this celebration of string playing in Stanislaus County!
