New Modesto Police Chief Appointed

Police Chief Appointed

Modesto City Manager Greg Nyhoff is pleased to announce the appointment of Galen Carroll to the position of Chief of Police. Carroll possesses more than 18 years of experience in law enforcement with the City of Long Beach where he most recently served as Police Commander of the North Patrol Division. Carroll began his career as a Police Officer, advanced to Sergeant then Lieutenant and is currently a Commander. Carroll’s wide variety of experience includes Field Training, Internal Affairs, Port Security, Administration, Field Support and Investigations.

The selection process for the Chief of Police included a competitive process with both internal and external candidates who were interviewed by three panels that included community members, current and former police Chiefs and/or Sheriffs, and City of Modesto Department Directors. An extensive background check was conducted on Carroll including contacting 27 references for interviews. Many of those interviewed were command staff, peers, and officers. The following are just a few statements made by those interviewed:

· “He has great integrity and work ethic.”

· “He is well liked by neighborhood associations because of his involvement and support.”

· “He is a solid leader who is widely thought of as firm and fair.”

· “He is an excellent problem solver and creative person.”

· “He sets high standards for his people and himself and is a great team builder.”

“Galen stood out above the rest during the selection process. He is well-grounded, has great integrity, intelligence and an all-around solid candidate,” said Nyhoff. “In addition to ranking the highest in the process, Galen has a command presence that will be well received by the Police Department. I also believe his vision and leadership style will be a great fit for not only the Modesto Police Department, but the Modesto community as a whole. Galen takes an active role in his current community by holding quarterly meetings to obtain feedback from citizens and businesses on the issues facing them, provides them with current crime trend information and gains their assistance in crime reduction – I look forward to him doing the same in Modesto.”

Carroll completed his Master of Arts degree in Organizational Leadership at Chapman University in Orange, CA and also holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Management from the University of Phoenix. In addition, he graduated the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s National Academy in Quantico, VA.

Carroll and his wife, Carlene, look forward to moving to the area to be closer to their family.

Carroll will be formally introduced to the Modesto City Council at their December 11, 2012 meeting. Carroll will assume the office of the Chief of Police on January 8, 2013, with an annual salary of $175,000. A swearing-in ceremony will be scheduled for a future date.
