Raising Funds, Friends and Awareness for the Modesto Library
By Maree Hawkins, Friends of the Modesto Library
“The only thing that you absolutely have to know is the location of the library.” – Albert Einstein
Even in today’s increasingly digital society, the local library remains a place of excitement,
learning and inclusion. Yes, many library materials – eBooks, language programs, magazines, even movies – are available online, without stepping foot into the brick and mortar downtown library. But regardless of how you “visit” and use it, the local library is a vital part of a vibrant community.
Organized in 1974, The Friends of the Modesto Library exists solely to support the library’s mission and Modesto’s downtown library. In particular, we focus on programs that engage young readers. This year alone, the Friends will give financial support to the annual Harry Potter Yule Ball, the local appearance of author Linda Joy Singleton, Diá del los Niños/de los Libros, Imagination Library and the free book giveaway at the Stanislaus County Fair. Many of these programs would not exist without Friends of the Library support.
But true friends also get together to have fun and share in a common purpose, and we do that, too. Volunteer opportunities abound for Friends members: we participate in the Annual Used Book Sale (our primary fundraiser), as well as Scholastic Book Sales that yield money and books for the library. We help out at library events and programs like the annual Halloween Parade and Read-to-a-Dog programs.
The Modesto Friends also raises money through annual memberships; donations from individuals, businesses such as Alfred Matthews and American Chevrolet; and local organizations like Omega Nu. Donations are often given in honor of a friend or loved one or in memory of some who has died.
Most people know that the Modesto Library is part of the 13-branch Stanislaus Library system. The county libraries are funded through a dedicated 1/8th-cent county-wide sales tax that provides almost 90% of funding for the libraries. “The Friends help close the gap,” says Friends of the Modesto Library President Denise Nordell. “Without us, it would be difficult for the Modesto library to offer some of its most popular programs.”
How can you get involved? First, join the Friends – annual memberships begin at just $25 – or make a donation at modestolibraryfiends.org. There, you will also find our most current newsletter. “With more members we can increase our monetary support for the library and continually promote the library in our community,” says Friends Membership Director Ellen Dambrosio.
