RetroView- Fitz and The Tantrums Interview

Fitz And The Tantrums By Efren Martinez

They are groovier than Dee-Lite, more enthusiastic than The B52’s and their sound gives me enjoyable flashbacks from my days with Martin Fry’s ABC. So why not, after speaking with John Wicks from Fitz and The Tantrums he informed me that their latest album, “More Then Just A Dream<https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z4mbxaa3XL8>” has a great deal of 80’s synthetic sound influences in comparison to their last album since all of the band members are products of the 80’s.

With that being said, Fitz and The Tantrums has a likable fun beat at any age with harmonic whistles, enjoyable lyrics and a rhythm that will keep you moving non stop. John and I hooked up over the phone just recently prior to their upcoming show at The Fox Theater in Oakland on the 3rd of April and outside of being part of an amazing band, he’s just a regular humble guy who finds his biggest challenge while on tour is being away from his family.

He shared with me that they aren’t one of those partying rock star bands, but in his words “very nerdy.” In fact he’s actually a father who’s into living a healthy lifestyle and enjoys running about 80 miles a week, even when he’s on tour with the band. Outside of being very health conscious, he and the other Tantrums have an amazing chemistry together. All the band members have an extensive résumé that’s pretty staggering. John himself has played with Bruno Mars and CeeLo Green and while the band originated in LA, John is the only one that doesn’t live there any more.

Fitz and The Tantrums will be in concert on April 3rd at The Fox Theater in Oakland and if you’ve seen them perform on David Letterman, Conan O’Brien or just recently on the Ellen DeGeneres show for her birthday, you know you’re in for an energetic good time because they always hit it hard while they are on stage. According to John, the biggest problem you’ll have at their shows is wiping that smile off your face.
