Publishers Note By: Chris Murphy ModestoView loves Rockabilly. This is truly some of the most exciting music ever and it has a unique history here in Modesto. The roots of Rockabilly lead back here to Modesto USA when Fred Maddux started slappin’ his string bass in late 1930’s for some “Hillbilly Boogie” and the rest is history. The Hillbilly music of Chester Smith and other radio stars and the railroad that carried the musicians up and down the valley from the canneries and farm helped blend and develop the rockin’ sound to make Rockabilly. Maddux Brothers and Rose were possibly the first “Rockabily” group.
Today, Rockabilly lives large and is a big part of car shows, Pin-ups, Lowriders and a new generation of fans that live to this Rockabilly and Psychobilly beat where retro is the future. Our own Refuzniks, Pendletons, Rockin’ Rick and so many others like Unity Music and Wreckin’ Rita make this the most happenin’ thing going.
