Public invited to June 1 Grand Opening

Soccer fans and the public from throughout the region are invited to the grand opening of the new soccer fields at Mary E. Grogan Community Park in Modesto. The celebration takes place June 1 beginning at 10 a.m. Modesto city officials and special guests, including Olympian Suzy Powell-Roos, will take part in a ceremonial “first kick” through the goal at about 10:30 a.m.

The opening celebration includes a flag ceremony with the Girls Scouts, soccer skills clinics for kids aged 6 to 10 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and exhibition games by AJAX United from 11:30 a.m. to approximately 3:00 p.m. Also on site will be information booths, a visit from Modesto Nuts mascots, and other activities.

All activities will be held at Mary E. Grogan Community Park at 3601 Litt Road in Modesto. The park is adjacent to Enochs High School and can be accessed via Sylvan Ave.

“We are thrilled to be celebrating the opening of the new soccer fields,” said Frank Cousineau who serves as Modesto Youth Soccer Association’s board president. “The new fields and the entire park are a huge asset for the kids, the entire Modesto community and the region as many tournament will be held at Grogan Park.”

The community park is named for Mary E. Grogan, a pioneer in the field of parks and recreation and the Director of the City of Modesto Parks and Recreation Department for 30 years and was a champion for park development.

Highlights of the park’s Phase I construction include three synthetic turf soccer fields, natural turf area for four full-size soccer fields, sports field lighting for all fields, a 500-stall parking lot, concession stand, restroom facility, a small office, and an agricultural well for irrigation. The soccer fields are a collaborative project between the City of Modesto and MYSA, which will provide funding for the annual maintenance of the soccer fields.
