Songwriter View: DAYSPRING
By Patty Castillo Davis

Welcome to the new year! We are creatures of habit-call it loyalty, call it routine, whatever you name it, it’s comfortable. Step out of that place and discover.
Vanessa Valencia is a name to notice, an artist to follow, a fresh face to learn about. An Alternative Independent Singer-Songwriter, her sound can be described as acoustic, Alternative-easy listening. Her voice hearkens Harriet Wheeler meets Alanis, and she handily accompanies herself on guitar. Valencia is quickly garnering a following because she never adopted that “trendy Indie-Girl vocal”, her sound is thoughtful and unique. You can listen to Vanessa show her artistry on Saturday, January 19, as a featured performer at the ModestoView stage located in Graceada Park during The Women’s March 2019 and January 27 during the DEVA Sunday Breakfast Music. Keep tabs on her.138

Our good friend to the North, the very talented MAMA winning Singer-Songwriter, Mondo Mariscal will be taking our area by storm. Mondo has a new band-Good Time Charlie who play all your favorite Country hits, old and new. Mondo has solo shows at O’Brien’s Tavern on 1/10 from 9 to midnight, Rivet’s on 1/17 at 8 pm, and the full band will perform at P Wexford’s on 1/24 at 8 pm and The Vault in Ripon on 1/31 from 7-10.
John Denver will be remembered as a prolific songwriter and storyteller who wrote some of the most memorable songs of the ’70s. Jim Curry pays tribute to Denver is his touring show-Take Me Home The Music Of John Denver. Recreating a “vast legacy of multi-platinum hits” for a 209 audience happens at the Gallo Center for the Arts on Friday, January 25 at 7:30 pm.
Start this new year off with a pledge to create and encourage beauty. Treat yourself to a concert, host a touring band in your home or turn your space into a venue, contribute to a crowdfunding source to help an artist achieve their dream or just show up and leave a tip. The breadth and vibrancy of the local music scene start with you. The performers are plenty, the support from you-significant.
