Music never goes out of fashion. Never. Not Gregorian Chant, not Kassia (the first female composer of the 9th century), not Scott Joplin, not Count Basie, not Pete Seeger, not Little Richard, not Nina Simone, nor Jimmy Webb. You get it? The resurgence of the collection of vinyl affirms this and places music in a category with art and fine jewelry- priceless heirlooms. Look around and uncover some classic gems in our region. Treat yourself to what this month’s musical offerings are.

Breakfast at DEVA Café doesn’t just showcase food handmade from scratch recipes, Mimosas and Micheladas, BUT really great music celebrating a cross section of genres in a family friendly atmosphere sharing a hip, loving vibe. September music features Tim Allen and Patty Castillo Davis on 9/3, Dale Huff on 9/10, Mattea Overstreet on 9/17 and Indy Folk on 9/24.

The Third Thursday Art Walk on September 21 will feature music throughout the many venues Downtown, stroll the art and take in the vast choices. The Modesto View stage will host the rockin sounds of Cylo at 11th and J Street.

Music on the Plaza is reaching it’s finale this month and not without strong representation by two award winning female Songwriter fronted bands. Valley Talent Project Winners, Lisette and the Loudmouths bring their snazzy jazzy Pop set on 9/8 and three time MAMA award winner Patty Castillo Davis brings her band and a few special guests out on 9/15.

Anthony Edwards will be at the Hughson Farmers Market with Shelly Streeter on 9/ 7 and with Nikki Cheverell at Most Wanted Wine in Oakdale on 9/9. Boscoe’s Brood will return to Modesto to Moon & Sixpence Music and Art House listening room on 9/16 at 7:30. Find Me &You at the Black Hearts Market at the Queen Bean on 9/1.

As you have probably already heard the date for An Intimate Evening of Acoustic Music with Willie Hines and Patty Castillo Davis was changed to Saturday, Sept. 9. This Songwriter showcase will include original material, arrangements of cover songs and special guest support from Johnny Feikert, Tim Allen and Dave Rogers. Music starts at 7pm and reservations are required, call the Barkin’ Dog Grill at 209-572-2341. This show is FREE and for all ages.

As the time nears for our local brand of recognition in music, the Modesto Area Music Awards (MAMA), I would like to thank you all who are out here tracking your favorite musicians, frequenting those venues that are considerate of the value of music and investing your money in cover charges, tip jars and artist merchandise. You do not even know how crucial you are to the “Makers”. Choosing music-NO, when the music chooses YOU and it becomes your purpose, it is a most difficult journey. There are no overnight successes, there is no gender equality, the most talented are not always justly revered in the music scene. Use your voice and advocate for the music you love.
