Oil painter Patrick Michael Karnahan is known as California’s Railroad Artist, having painting over 400 portraits. The artist painted his first train painting at age of eight. Throughout the years the artist’s main focus has been on historic short-line railroads and steam locomotives. To Karnahan, the steam locomotive is a marvelous invention that is full of life and expression with metal reflecting the landscape around it. “There is just something about steam that captures the imagination of the viewer, with its plumes of smoke and romance of the past.”- Karnahan.
This special railroad exhibit will feature a total of 18 railroad portraits of California most historic railroad lines that included local favorites as the Sierra Railroad, Yosemite Valley Railroad, and Westside Lumber Company. Many of the artworks displayed were featured in a past OSH- (Orchard Supply Hardware) calendar a few years back. The California hardware chain gave out over 50 thousand calendars featuring the artist work.
Karnahan is also known as American’s Wildland Firefighting Artist, and has won numerous awards in that subject matter. Currently the artist featured work, “2013 Rim Fire” (August Heroes) is on display at the Washington Office of the Department of Agriculture, United States Forest Service building lobby. The painting had won first place award for Forestry Subject.
