Modesto’s Own First Pop-Culture Convention to be held at the Modesto Centre Plaza July 9th & 10th, 2016
Tickets available online at www.modestocon.bpt.me and local comic and games shops all around Stanislaus Co.
The city of Modesto has earned its fame as the home of geek culture icons such as George Lucas (known for “American Graffiti” and the “Star Wars” saga) and “Marvel’s Avengers” star Jeremy Renner (Hawkeye), as well as “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” and “Angel” star James Marsters (Spike). The city of Modesto is the first city to officially celebrate “May the 4th be with you” as an city holiday, every May 4th in honor of Yoda’s epic line, “May the Force be with you”.
The cosplay, anime, comic, and all-around geek culture is ripe in Modesto. It grows as fervently as our almonds. We are the perfect city for such a convention. Mod-Con hopes to further the culture of geekery, to educate the public in all aspects of geekery, to provide fun, safe events for families to attend, to expand downtown business, and to support local business. This is a family-friendly event, at only $4 a ticket in advance, $5 at the door, you can afford to bring the whole family.
Mod-Con is happy to announce several panels such as “Cosplay 101”, “Self-Image In Comics” led by Chunky Girl Comics, “L.A.R.P. 101”, “Starting a Comic Series”, and more. There will be a costume contest as well as The Geek Fashion Show.
Special guests will include Doug Jones, long remembered for his work as The Silver Surfer in “Fantastic Four Rise of the Silver Surfer”. He’s also the life and soul of Abe Sapien in “Hellboy” and “Hellboy II The Golden Army”, as well as in “Pan’s Labrynth” as both Pan (the faun creature) and The Pale Man.
Sam Jones, best known for his role as Flash Gordon will also be appearing. A new generation has been introduced to him through cameos in Ted and Ted 2. Most recently, he was cast in the Animal Planet’s family series “Hollywood Safari” as a park ranger. He appeared in”Deadman Switch”, an episode of the television series “Stargate SG-1”. In 2007, he played the prisoner Krebb in the Sci Fi Channel original television series “Flash Gordon”.
You will also be able to meet the female film-makers from Unburdened Entertainment, on their most buzzed about new hit web-series, Supergirl/Unburdened. The show focuses on both fan films and original content (stories containing strong female influences and exploring the darkest sides of being a vigilante) using original materials written, produced and directed by enthusiastically nerdy girls.
Modesto Con will also have members from several fan groups in full costume; 501st, Mandalorian Mercs, Rebel Legion(Star Wars), USS Saroyan of the 1701st Fleet(Star Trek), The Whovian Fan Club(Dr Who) and more.
Along with an Artist Alley where you will find local artists Allen Passalaqua and Ethen Beavers alongside artists from around the US including Dennis Knight and Jeffrey Scott(aka 1019). Of course there will be Vendors selling everything from comic books, gaming cards to science fiction, horror and classic toys.
