Underwood Cry Pretty Tour

Carrie Underwood Cry Pretty Tour

By Michael Mangano

Carrie Underwood “Cry Pretty” tour should have been called we are women and watch us kick ass! Make no mistake this was a statement tour about the lack of representation by women in country music, on the country charts, and at festivals. You can tell she wanted to show all those young girls in the audience about girl power with an all women show! If you love great harmony you will enjoy the opening act Runaway June made up of Hannah Mulholland, Naomi Cooke and Jennifer Wayne who happen to be the granddaughter of John Wayne. We have seen this talented trio play around modesto a couple of times Country Acoustic Christmas and at LAC 2017 so I knew to expect an excellent performance. The support act was Maddie Marlow and Tae Dye as Maddie and Tae who I never have seen but were equally amazing as they sang and strutted around the 360 stage which made the Oracle arena the perfect venue cause there were no bad seats. I recommend checking this talent Duo at the Stanislaus Country Fait, Monday, July 15th.

From the moment the giant screens playing a video of a burst of glitter and sparkles rose up, and Underwood stood atop a rising platform, you had the feeling this was going to be a magical performance. She let fans know that this female performer and recent mother was going to keep rising and help other women along the way. Underwood started her set with “Southbound” and ended with an encore performance of “Love Wins”. She danced and sang on every inch of that 360 stage, Performing her two hours set covering most of the hit. Underwood wanted to pay tribute to all the female country singer who came before as Maddie & Tae and Runaway June return to the stage to join Underwood to perform classic hits from past legends like Tammy Wynette Stand by your Man, Loretta Lynn’s Coal Miner’s Daughter and Dolly Parton’s 9 to 5. There was no doubt why she won American Idol some 14 years ago. What I left with is Underwood proved if you build an all-women show people will come and talent is talent plain and simple. It has been established in Hollywood women can draw an audience, so maybe slowly it can happen in country music.
