Support Your Local Veterans
By Abigail Power

The Central Valley has a strong community of brave men and women that have served our country in many conflicts and wars around the world. Though we live in a very patriotic country and support our armed forces, there are many veterans at home that are in need of resources, health care, and community.

The American Legion is a non-profit organization that has veterans’ best interests at heart and has been working hard to create a friendly, welcoming environment in their community. The American Legion was founded in March 1919 after World War I to help soldiers returning home and the American Legion was also instrumental in the creation of the Veterans Bureau to provide life insurance, disabilities compensation, prosthetics, and health care services. Today, the American Legion across the country continues to provide resources to veterans.

The American Legion Post 74, located at the Stanislaus Veterans Center at 3500 Coffee Road, has created a space for veterans to gather, meet, reflect and tackle the issues facing the community. American Legion Post 74 hosts events monthly for all veterans in our community to share and have fun! Every Tuesday and Friday, the Stanislaus Veterans Center hosts doughnuts for veterans to get together and plus the live music is coming back! Thursdays, live music will be at the center to support local music and encourage friendships and community for our brave men and women who have served our country. From dinners, to “fun nights”, to post breakfasts, to Boys and Girls State Dinners, there are many ways to participate and be a part of the Stanislaus County Veterans Center!

If you would like to attend one of the many wonderful events put together by the American Legion at the Stanislaus Veterans Center, please visit the center at 3500 Coffee Road or contact the American Legion Post 74 at 888-291-0174. If you would like to volunteer or have resources to help provide help to these services, please reach out to Richard Edgecomb with the Stanislaus County Veterans Advisory Commission at rtedgecombal@gmail.com<mailto:rtedgecombal@gmail.com>. And remember, to think of and honor those who served this Veterans Day, Thursday November 11th!

Please note, the Modesto Veterans Day Parade will take place on Saturday November 13 at 9 am. The route will be down Needham from O Street to Graceada Park’s Mancini Bowl where there will be programs and speakers until 3 pm. Please plan on attending and showing your support.
