I have decided to listen to Sacramento Punk Trio Groovie Ghoulies and pulled out their tribute to Chuck Berry. It is Super Bowl Sunday and for years Kepi Ghoulie and I put on an annual event “The Super Bowl of Rock n’ Roll. Giving kids(big and little a like) a place and an event to look forward to outside the world of Football. Some great bands played the Blackwater Café and Plea for Peace in Stockton, Over the 7 years we did these shows with Groovie Ghoulies, The Phenomenauts, The Re-Volts, Off With Their Heads, Hanover Saints and more.
It has been over 60 years since “Maybelline” roared out of the earliest Rock n’ Roll raidos. and you can still hear Chuck Berry played every day on oldie stations around the world. The Groovie Ghoulies join a long line of artist(Elvis Presley, Rolling Stones, Tom Petty, New York Dolls, Sex Pistols, Jonathan Richman) inspired to cover this American Icon.
On Berry’d Alive the Ghoulies dig deep to share the gospel to a whole new generation of kids. Redoing “Betty Jean”, “Trick or Treat”, “All Aboard” and 4 other classic rock n’ roll tracks that even die hard fans may have missed over the years. As with all great tributes after listening to the Groovie Ghoulies pay homage to Chuck Berry, you should be inspired to listen to the originals.
“So Hail! Hail! Rock and Roll! Let’s get lost in this body and soul! Let’s get BERRY’D ALIVE!!!”
