MAMAView-When I Got the Music I Got a Place to Go
By Middagh Goodwin
As the East Bay Punk band sang in their song “Radio”, “When I got the music I got a place to Go, Radio, Radio, Radio, Radio,” The Selecter sang in “On My Radio”, “It’s just the same old show on my radio,” and Ramones “Do you remember Rock n Roll Radio.” Just a few of the many songs celebrating the airwaves.
Did you know that right here in Modesto we have a volunteer-run community radio station? Located right in the middle of the dial KCBP 95.5 FM is the Voice of the Valley. At just about any time of the day you can tune in and hear local music playing on the airwaves, with local programs peppered throughout. MAMA Radio is my hour-long show that focuses on music from the 209 and airs weekly, Mondays at 5 pm, Fridays at 9 pm, and Saturdays at 6 pm. I also host This is SKA(a two-hour syndicated show on over 5 dozen stations worldwide) that airs Sundays at 5 am, and Mondays at 11 pm with the first hour also airing Tuesdays at 9 pm and Saturdays at 11 pm. Christian E Boyatt of the Flowers hosts Freak Radio on Tuesdays at 11 pm and Thursdays at 6 pm. 2X MAMA Comedy Award winner Jimmie Menezes is the co-host of Sports Talk with Jay Freeda which airs on Thursdays at 5 pm. Check out the full schedule of programming at www.kcbpradio.org/schedule. Musicians send your music for consideration to mamaradio209@gmail.com and jcostello@igc.org,
2X MAMA Promoter winner Mike Vanek has recently created his internet station WPFR-Pirate Flag Radio based in Bristol, Virginia, and can be heard at www.radioking.com/play/
There are tons of great programs on both KCBP and WPFR, like and follow them on social media, tune in, and support independently created content.
