ZenView- Distraction

By Mary Layton
Distraction

Distraction is like a double-edged sword with two sides.
There are times when distraction seems like a welcome relief from worries and stressful situations. I can dispel a dark thought in an instant by listening to a beautiful song, watching an entertaining show, or getting busy with something that gives me renewed energy. Parents know how to distract an upset child with a toy or a fun task. Distraction can be a powerful tool. We know that a crowd at a basketball game can actually succeed at times in distracting a player from making a free shot by shouting and making wild arm movements. The ability of a player to ignore such distractions comes from lots of practice and mental confidence. It’s impressive when the player makes his shot regardless of the noise. Concentration is a great skill to cultivate.

When my mind is distracted and restless, I make mistakes. There is separation from my immediate reality. I’m in a mental fog. I feel physically effected too, my breathing is shallower and I feel more tension in my body. Our mind is a monster that needs constant taming. This is why it is helpful to have Meditation, Yoga and Tai Chi in your life. Or any kind of quiet, repetitive activity, like walking and swimming, hiking or bicycling. Watching your thoughts and you will find out that you, and only you can tame that wild mind. Tell it kindly to hold still and listen more deeply. I guess it requires that you want to get to know your mind, to get to know yourself. I believe the more we can get a hold of our minds the more peaceful and self-assured we will become.
