ZenView – Gratitude

The Attitude of Gratitude
By Mary Layton

When you look at life with an attitude of gratitude you may find yourself lucky. Last month I went to Germany to visit family and friends. Two days before my flight back home I got Covid. I had just arrived at the house of an old friend from childhood, and so lucky for me, she offered to take care of me. It was easy to postpone my flight by a week. In order for her not to get infected I stayed in my room while she set down food several times a day at my door. What an unexpected time- out! When I wasn‘t sleeping I could watch the beautiful change of season outside the window, all the vibrant autumn colors of the leaves, and listen to the noises and songs of the squirrels and birds. With no place to run to I could give myself to being there in the moment. In addition I had time to read world literature for many hours. You never know what looks like a bad thing at first, can turn out to be a blessing. The time to celebrate Thanksgiving is here once again. A time when we can remember to give thanks for all that the good things that already exist in our lives, the relationships we have to family and friends and neighbors, associates and colleagues, our communities, to cultivate and protect them. I feel grateful to see that I have choices, instead of choosing a negative and divisive path, I can choose to live with the idea of finding common ground with others and share what I have with them, participate and help where I can.

Wish you all a very happy and peaceful Thanksgiving!
