Remedies
By Mary Layton
Winter is here, the holiday season, parties with friends and family! Life in winter makes us looking for warmth and light. Some of us sun lovers may not be so thrilled with colder temperatures and grey skies.
We can get the winter blues! Here are some of my remedies.
From the moment I wake up, I plan to put my mind in a positive and joyful mode, as if I was choosing a nice radio station. I will make sure to do something fun at some point during the day day or evening. If possible I will include someone else. We are social animals and need each other’s company. I may take a stroll through downtown and do some shopping there. Grab lunch or dinner, go see a movie, or a show at the Gallo. Once in a while I treat myself to a massage. I practice my piano. find some way to express myself creatively with water colors. I recently joined a drum circle at the State Theatre and loved it! It was amazing how happy and young everybody looked.
How else can we cultivate happiness in our lives? Martha Stewart says that she found lasting happiness being a gardener. She made sure that she was learning something new every day. It may require a commitment but can bring you joy for a lifetime. You are investing in happiness and possibly a long life.
It’s the season of giving. We share what we have with others. We shop for just the perfect gift for our loved ones. It’s always a great, uplifting feeling to give to the needy and less fortunate. Pass onto others what we are not using. Giving makes the giver and the receiver happy. That includes our smiles and good cheers, our courage and resilience, sharing our hopes and dreams.
I wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy and Healthy New Year!
